The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
